A Photographer's Lightbox

I first saw this 9 years ago, wandering around the Marais District in Paris.  Most of my college French is long forgotten but translating this was hauntingly easy.  And looking up and down an empty street, with few differences from 1942, it took no imagination to think if I closed my eyes and opened them, it still could be.  Sans camera, my self promise was, if I ever returned, I would make this photograph.

Here is my translation of the sign at Lycee Victor Hugo, 27 rue de Sevigne, Paris, France

“From 1942 to 1944, over 11,000 children were deported from France by the Nazis with the active participation of the French Vichy government and murdered in the death camps because they were Jews.  More than 500 of these lived in the 3rd Arrondissment, attending Victor Hugo High School.”

They were taken to Birkenau and Auschwitz.  Of the 11,000, some were not yet school age.

Our Better Angels

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Woke at 3 AM seeing these and could not sleep

There was nothing else to do but find the Digital Negatives, re-edit all and revamp this blog for better image display
